Sticky Sesame Steak w/ Rice. I always want to make sure I do any Asian cooking justice. So I have been studying up, and I worked on this recipe so many times that Steve and I had it every single night last week! Each time, a little different. The steak is sliced thin and melts in your mouth. The sauce is a flavor bomb of sticky goodness over rice. You can easily throw a steamed broccoli or your favorite veggie for added vegetables or substitute for a vegan dinner!
Asian Ingredients
I have been trying my hand at different flavor combinations and different origins for my inspiration. I purchased Mirin, a Rice cooking wine, & it became a main inspiration for this dish. It was a little out of my comfort zone, and I wanted to use it! I knew I wanted a really sticky sauce. I tried Rice Wine Vinegar as a substitute, but the sugars, consistency and flavor of Mirin really make this dish. You CAN substitute with rice wine vinegar and a little bit more sugar, but I think regular Rice Wine is an ingredient you won’t be sad you purchased.
The Sticky Sauce Details
For this recipe, the main focus is the sauce. We completely cook the steak to our liking before making the sauce, letting it rest while the sauce bubbles and gets delicious. At the end of my recipe testing saga, I felt this was the best way to go. Cooking the steak before gets it out of the way. Now you won’t feel like you are running around the kitchen like a chicken with its head cut off.
Once you get your fragrant ingredients thrown in the pan (sesame oil, seeds, green onion, garlic and ginger), deglaze with Mirin and add the rest of the sauce ingredients. All that is left is to throw the rice in the microwave and wait for most of the water to cook out. Look for “slow, fat bubbles.” Those quotes are me quoting myself, ha! “Slow, fat bubbles” is not exactly a culinary term. But I think you will know exactly what I mean. The bubbles won’t be a quick simmer, and the sauce will look nice and thick.
I am so ready for the holiday season. These warm dinners with lots of rice (and carbs in general) are my favorites. I cannot wait for all of the Thanksgiving recipes I have coming, and Christmas cookies, and cocktails, and general holiday decorations. The list goes on!
